This beautiful medal shows the Archangel Raphael leading Tobit’s son Tobias on his journey. The inscription around the edge is in Latin and translates as "St Raphael Pray For Us".
St Raphael's name means God heals. His story is found in the book of Tobit which is accepted in the Catholic and Orthodox Bibles. He is sent in disguise by God to be a traveling companion to Tobit's son, Tobiah. After they return from their journey, Raphael heals Tobit from blindness and reveals his identity as "the angel Raphael, one of the seven, who stand before the Lord" Tobit 12:15. In Islam, Raphael is the fourth major angel; in Muslim tradition, he is known as Israfil.
