    Description

    EMERY DARCY SIGNED PHOTO,
"To Dale McNabney, with cordial greetings, Emery Darcy, '47", 8 x 10, b/w, of American tenor at the Metropolitan Opera. Minor corner bends and a small crease at bottom edge and on the right side touching his shoulder, age toning, otherwise in fine condition.
    Emery Darcy (1908-1998)
a tenor who sang at the Metropolitan Opera in the 1940's and early 50's. His roles were primarily comprimario, but very occasionally a lead such as Siegmund, as seen in this photo, came his way. He was a very rare operatic commodity: a Wagnerian Heldentenor (heroic tenor). Darcy combined the lusty, ringing power of a baritone with a tenor's high range. When Darcy stepped into Lauritz Melchior place to sing Parsifal, he got a critical ovation. He is also known for his work on Der Rosenkavalier (1949).
