American Sterling Silver Open Master Salt Dish by Howard & Company of New York City, c.1890. This elegant, very large salt dish has a gilt interior, an applied scrolling, flared Gadroon rim, and a fluted body which sits on 3 scroll lion's paw feet. The fluted body bears two monograms in ornate, period script: ESW and JS. One of the largest late 19th Century salt dishes we have seen, it is 3 7/8" diameter, 2 1/8" deep and weighs 153 grams or 5 ozs. Troy. The excellent original condition and clear, crisp detail, with no removals, repairs or alterations, make this an especially attractive offering. The soft, warm, original finish is present, with no buffing or machine polishing. [r730]
